Just like any other industry in the World Economy, Textile Industry is a dynamic one. It grows rapidly, occupying more and more regions of the world. It grows not only in numbers of produced results but also in numbers of people involved in the production processes. In one word, the industry is growing. And just like any growing industry, at one point or another, Apparel Industry has to face challenges as well.

Challenges are diverse. They can be connected with environmental, raw material, finished product and other sections of the production process. And this article is going to tackle some of the major problems that the industry is facing right now and cover a few solutions for them.

Sustainability

One of the biggest challenges in the world for the entire economy is sustainable development. As different world organizations take steps to promote and achieve sustainability in every industry of the global economy as well as people’s social-economic lives, it is still undeniable that the issue remains unsolved. The unsustainability of the production, as mentioned, is a relevant problem for all industries, but the textile industry overall has its unique place within the whole matter. The Apparel industry pollutes the environment in significant amounts of natural resource usage. Water and air are only two of the many resources the industry uses without thinking. However, a lot of companies have already taken up the control over the situation to come up with technologies that would reduce the damage and wastage of the resources, so that other generations have access to them as well.

Recycling

It is a well-known fact that a key to sustainability and unwasteful production is the reduction of wastes through recycling. However, it is also known that a lot of natural fibers and materials, such as cotton, for example, are almost impossible to recycle. And that is what a lot of companies are busy trying to figure out. They are working hard to find solutions, technologies, and systems that would allow to dissolve cotton-like materials from cotton garments and turn them into fibers that can be used again.

Tropical countries could benefit from recycling too while turning citrus peels into yarns that could be utilized in garment production. Recycling processes can be applied to a lot of other materials as well, for example, polyester, which ‘s hard to recycle without damaging its quality. And still, there is a way to break down the clothing piece made from polyester and separate the polyester itself with particular microbes. As much as some things present a real challenge to recycle and reuse, there are still methods to find a way for a recycled garment production with the possibility to reuse almost 50% of textiles intended for trash.

Fabric Wastes

Even under the conditions of the most productive and efficient production, there is still a waste of fabric that will end up being thrown away. How to deal with this problem? Well, a good idea is to track the wasted materials to be collected and later be given for reproduction. This idea has been presented to the Global Change Award as an innovative solution for current industry issues.

Some other challenges of the garment industry involve the increase of omnichannel supply chain since a vast majority of consumers are now shopping online. This creates a challenge for the fashion industry overall to make a right distribution of the finished products. Another issue that the industry is now facing is the potential problem of producing what is trendy. Huge companies like Nike are even not immune to the changes in the market, as “popular things might slowly get out of style” at one point or another.

Conclusion

Taking a look at what we have, we can sum up with simply stating that no industry is guaranteed from challenges and problems. However, it is wise to remember that those challenges exist to overcome them. Hence, some innovative ideas within the Apparel Sector are being developed and implemented to keep a sustainable future for the overall Textile Industry and particularly garment production.
